The sarong is a traditional type of clothing worn throughout the area. These traditional garments are worn by both men and women throughout Indonesia and many parts of Asia. They are also common in Africa and in the Pacific Islands.
Sarong
The beauty of this clothing is that they are so practical. Depending on how casual or elegant you want to be you can dress them up or down. They are also perfect for a beach wrap or a longer or shorter skirt or dress like garment. You can find more information about sarong dresses by clicking on our Sarong Dress link.
The traditional Indonesian sarongs are different from what may commonly be thought of in many western countries. They are not a flat piece of fabric but rather a tube shaped piece of cloth. In Indonesia, they may be called a sarung or a sheath.
Most sarongs Bali are made from cotton. You can find out more about cotton sarongs by clicking on our Cotton Sarongs link.

How To Wear A Traditional Sheath
Wearing a sarong Bali is easy. You simply step into the tube of the fabric. If there is a decorative or designed panel this should be to the back, roughly in the middle of your body. This decorative strip or panel is known as the kepala. It is woven or dyed into the fabric.
Pull the fabric up over your hips until the lower end is at the desired height. For men, this just over the ankles and for women it can be from the ankles to just below the knees. Position the kepala and then bring in the extra edges of the fabric to the navel. Fold over each other and roll the top of the fabric down until it rests just above the hips.
Rolling the waist actually holds the garment in place without the need for a belt or pins. This is the traditional choice but there are also other alternatives.
Mens sarongs are identical to womens sarongs, except that they come in a number of different patterns. If you are looking to find out more information about Mens Sarongs, you can click on our Mens Sarongs link.
A Wraparound Sarong Bali
Not traditional but very popular for beachwear, a wraparound sarong is what most Westerners think of when they look for a sarong. This is a flat piece of fabric that is tied at the top to hold it in place.
These types of sheaths often have fringe or fabric strips at the bottom. This type is simply placed across the hips at the back and then the ends brought to the front. The fringe is positioned along the bottom.
The ends of the fabric are then tied into a knot to hold the fabric in place. You can adjust the length by folding it over at the top before or after knotting. The knot can be positioned to the front or to the side.
You can help keep the sarong Bali in place by using a Sarong Buckle to tie the two ends of a sarong together.
Many women like this style because it is less restrictive on leg movement. It is also a very comfortable addition to your beach bag or for a lightweight skirt to match with a loose fitting blouse or tank top.

Batik & tie dye sarong choices
Batik Sarongs are a bit different from the traditional decorative styles of sarongs from Bali. Instead of just a panel the entire garment features the pattern. Often the patterns are detailed and include rich colors of blues, greens, reds and yellows. The patterns feature natural designs such as flowers, leaves and vines. To learn more about the types of batik found in Bali take a look at our Batik Sarongs Bali page, and about the sarongs from other islands in Indonesia on the Indonesian Sarongs page.
Sarongs can also be decorated in what is termed a “tie dye” decorative style. Tie Dye Sarongs use a special process to add different colors to the sarong fabric, resulting in some very unusual and colorful sarong patterns. You can find out more information about Tie Dye Sarongs by clicking on our Tie Dye Sarongs link as well as the Bali Pareo page.
