A sarong is a very simple, yet extremely versatile piece of clothing. These days more and more Indonesians are adopting the Western style of dress, but the sarong still plays an important part.

Indonesian sarongs styles vary from island to island. In Sumatra you can find rich red and gold silk sarongs, whereas in Sumba, they specialize in woven ikat, which uses more brown and orange tones. Java is the center for batik and there are many different patterns and colors available.

There are simple Indonesian sarongs, which are worn around the house, and more elaborate ones that are worn for special occasions. Various techniques are used to create sarongs, from batik, to ikat tie die and screen printing. The choice is endless, and you can be sure to find something that you like.

indonesian sarongs for women

Women in Indonesia use sarongs for a variety of purposes. They can be worn as skirts around the house, or as temple wear, or even used as a sling to carry their babies. Every woman will have several sarongs in her wardrobe, to be used as needed.

Sarongs that are worn around the house tend to be made from simple batik designs, in the earth tones, so as not to show the dirt. These are made from cotton and are very cool to wear in the warm climate. They consist of one piece of cloth that is wrapped around the waist, and tied in a knot. It can be worn long or short.

When going to the temple or special occasions, women like to wear more ornate styles of Indonesian sarongs. Silks, chiffon and ikat are popular choices, and look very stylish when paired with a lacy kebaya shirt. Deep purples and reds, with golden patterns are often used for this purpose as these are typically royal colors.

indonesian sarongs for men

The most common style of Indonesian sarongs for men is the sheath, or tubular cloth. This is a tube of fabric that is very simple to wear. It requires simply stepping in, and rolling the fabric down until it sits securely on the hips. This style is most common in Java. In Bali the men tend to still use the flat sarong.

Men use sarongs to relax around the house, to go to the beach and also to the temple. When going to the temple, the men wear two sarongs. One regular sarong on the inside, and a shorter one, called “saput” on the outside. This double layer looks very smart, when paired with the white or cream colored temple jacket that men traditionally wear.

The colors of Indonesian sarongs for men are mostly browns and blacks, and use a plaid pattern. They are made from cotton, and are very easy to wear. Many westerners living in Bali have adopted this style of dress around the house as they find it to be so comfortable.

how to wear indonesian sarongs

Sarongs can be worn in many different ways. Women can tie them at the waist, like a skirt, around the neck, as a dress, or on one shoulder, for an off the shoulder look. They can also be used as a head scarf, or a baby sling. To create a sling, the fabric is tied at one shoulder, and a cradle formed at the hip.

Men wear their sarongs tied at the hips, with an extra panel folded at the front, to allow for ease of movement. The fabric falls to the feet level, in a skirt like fashion.
