indonesian fabric: batik
One of the most well known techniques that has been developed in Indonesia is the art of batik making. Indonesian batik is created by applying wax to finely woven cotton cloth. The molten wax is applied by hand, using traditional tools, creating a design.
The Indonesian fabric is then dyed, and the areas that have the wax are protected from the dye. The dying process is repeated until the colors are complete. The wax is then scraped or boiled off.
Fine designs are created using a pen like instrument, whereas larger prints can be made using a stamp. The most refined batik fabric has the wax design on both front and back of the material. There are many imitation batiks on the market, so this is the way of checking to see that you are purchasing a genuine article.
Batik is made all over Indonesia, but the most famous batik comes from Yogyakarta, and there are many workshops open to visitors for you to learn more about this ancient art, and even try your hand at it!
indonesian ikat
Another type of Indonesian fabric is the ikat. This is a very distinctive type of cloth, that is created by dyeing patterns on the thread before they are attached to a loom to be woven. This takes a great deal of careful measurement to create the desired pattern.
There is a small village in Bali that specializes in this type of Indonesian fabric. You can visit this village and watch the weavers at work. Large hand made looms take pride of place in the homes, and the women spend hours patiently weaving. Some cloths can take months to make.
This style of fabric is reversible as the designs are equally visible on both sides of the cloth. The thread used can be made of cotton or silk, and is mostly brightly colored, to create very striking patterns.
The ikat style of fabric is used to make sarongs that are worn to the temple, on special occasion. They also make beautiful wall hangings.

songket
Songket is a style of fabric that incorporates gold or silver thread within the weaving. Songket was traditionally worn by the Royal families and was seen as a symbol of power. This style of textile remains a status symbol to this day, and is often used to make elaborate sarongs to be used at weddings.
This style of fabric is mostly associated with the island of Sumatra, and there are hundreds of different patterns available. It is made using a wooden or bamboo frame. The background of this stylish fabric is created using dark cotton threads. The gold or silver threads are then woven in as decorations. These create a shimmer effect when the light shines on them.
