The traditional Bali textiles are intricate woven cloths using a combination of colors. These are made using hand operated looms, and involve a very laborious process. One piece of cloth can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months to create. The end product is a beautiful work of art. However, this cloth is not practical to be used for clothing, and is mostly reserved for ceremonial and display purposes.
As Indian traders started to come to Bali, they brought with them fabrics that were faster to produce, and are now widely available. Rows of shops selling silk, rayon, cottons and lace can be found in Denpasar and are very popular with anyone in the textile industry.
You can see the complete range of clothing & accessories we sell – beach clothing, women’s/men’s/children’s clothing, batik clothing, handbags, shoes, belts, sandals, shawls etc by clicking on our Clothing & Accessories Catalog link.
silk textiles
Silk is a natural fiber, obtained from the cocoons of silk worms. The structure of the fiber allows the fabric to detract light at different angles. This means the fabric appears to change color as the person wearing it moves around.
Silk is a very lightweight Bali textile that is incredibly comfortable to wear. It is also kind to the skin, reducing dryness and irritation. Due to these properties, silk is a very popular textile to use for under garments. It is also often used to make shirts, ties, blouses and dresses. It is one of the more expensive fabrics, but it truly does make you feel like a million dollars when you wear it.
rayon textiles
If you are looking for a less expensive version of silk, rayon is the answer. This textile is composed of cellulose, which is obtained from cotton, or the pulp of trees. Rayon has been used in the Bali textile industry for years, and is often referred to as artificial silk.
Rayon is a cool, comfortable, easy care natural fabric. It is not as fragile as silk, but still, it is advised to be washed in cold water. It is loose and flowing so flattering for all body types. Dresses, skirts, and shirts all look great made out of this very versatile fabric. It is a great fabric to use when travelling as it always looks great, and does not hold creases.
cotton textiles
Cotton is another natural Bali textile. It is a very popular fabric to use in the hot climate. The reason for this is that it keeps you cool. It is hypoallergenic, so it is great for people with sensitive skin. In Bali you can find clothes made with 100% cotton, as well ones made with cotton blend. The beauty of the cotton blend is that is does not crease as much as the 100% cotton.
Cotton is used to make T shirts, dresses, and shirts. It is also the most common fabric used for the making of beach sarongs. The durability and the fact that it absorbs moisture make it a great choice for wearing to the beach. The cotton sarong makes a great alternative to a towel as it is lightweight and easy to carry.

balinese lace
Handmade Balinese lace first started to be popular in the 1980’s, and is a popular Bali textile. This style is known as cutwork in English, or Krawang in Balinese. This Bali textile is made by being stretched on bamboo hoops, and sewn by hand on foot powered machines. The thread is built up in layers, creating a pattern. The empty spaces are then delicately cut away with tiny sharp scissors. It can take up to 5 days to create one piece of this beautiful cloth.
This Balinese lace is used to create very unique looking shirts and dresses, as well as linens for the house. The fabric used is 100% cotton, so is cool to wear, especially as the holes in the pattern allow the air in.
