Bali, Indonesia, Balinese woman applies wax on a piece of batik in Bali,Indonesia.Batik-making is an important part of Indonesian culture.

Batik originated from Java, where it is a very important part of the culture. The traditional batik from Java uses mostly earth tone colors. The majority being browns, mixed with black and white. This batik is used to make sarongs that are worn to the mosques, as well as smart shirts to be worn to the office.

When the Javanese people started to spread out in to Bali, they brought their batik styles with them. Over the years, the creative Balinese have adapted this traditional style, and created a more modern version. This Bali batik fabric is no longer only used for sarongs, but can now be utilized for making women’s dresses, men’s shirts and even children’s clothing.

patterns and colors in bali batik

Where the traditional batik used earth tone colors, the Bali batik uses much more vibrant tones. These are blended in to a smooth gradation of color with many shades. These resemble the tie dye look and process. The traditional Javanese batik uses a pen like instrument to draw the patterns in wax. Whereas the Bali version is created using wax stamps. The theory is still the same, the color of the fabric is maintained under the wax stamp when the fabric is dyed.

The patterns used in Bali batik still follow the traditional theme of nature, with leaves, flowers and birds being the most common motifs. However other patterns are starting to be used as this style is transformed from traditional to modern.

There are even little baby boots and bibs available.

For the boys there are very appealing brightly colored shirt and short sets. There are even mini boxer shorts. These can be worn as underwear, or as pyjamas in the summer time. The fabric used for children’s batik clothes is made of 100% cotton so is hypoallergenic. This means that it is very gentle against the children’s skin, and is very cool to wear in the warm weather.
