Most people think of sarongs as being typically used by women. In Bali this is not true. Sarongs are used by both men and women. The style of the sarong men differs slightly to the women’s version, but is still just as popular.
Where in the western culture a sarong may look like a skirt, and therefore appear too feminine, in Bali men have a very different view. The sarong men has been part of traditional clothing for centuries. It is used as a comfortable way of relaxing around the house, as well as an integral part of the Hindu Temple dress code.
styles of sarong men
The most common style of sarong men in Indonesia is the sheath. This is a tube of fabric that is very simple to wear. It requires simply stepping in, and rolling the fabric down until it sits securely on the hips. This style is most common in Java. In Bali the men tend to still use the flat sarong.
Men use sarongs to lounge around the house, to go the beach and also to the temple. When going to the temple, the men wear two sarongs. One regular sarong on the inside, and a shorter one, called “saput” on the outside. This double layer looks very smart, when paired with the white or cream colored temple jacket that men traditionally wear.
patterns and colors
As in women’s sarongs, there are many different patterns and colors available for sarongs for men. The patterns tend to be more geometric than floral, to give a more masculine look. The colors are also different. Sarongs for men tend to use more sedate, earth toned colors, rather than the bright tones.
In general, the batik designs are used for the temple sarongs, and are mostly brown in color. More ornate and colorful ikat sarongs are used for important religious ceremonies like weddings, and tooth filing. These are usually very regal, with gold threads running through them. Other styles of cotton sarong are used for relaxing at home or on the beach. The tie-dye style of sarong men, using rasta colors are particularly popular with the young men on the beach

how to wear sarong men
The Balinese have a particular way of wearing their sarongs, that look particularly interesting with folds of fabric hanging at the front. To achieve this look, start by holding the sarong horizontally behind your body. Make sure there is more length on the right side than the left. Fold the left side over to the center of your stomach. Bring the right end round to meet the left in the center, and hold with your right hand. Fold the excess fabric back over your hand to form a pleat. Secure by rolling the waistband over about 3 times, or until it feels tight enough to not fall down.
For a narrower wrap, and a fuller pleat, fold over the hand more, before rolling down. The finished look will have a fold of fabric at the front. This is a suave look, as well as allowing plenty of room for movement. With this extra fabric at the front, walking is easy, as well as sitting down, so there is no need for tiny steps like the women.
