Carved Balinese masks
Masks have been a part of the culture in Bali for hundreds of years. They depict characters in the ancient Hindu epic stories, and are worn by the dancers. These masks bring another dimension to the dance, allowing the performers to take on the character that they are representing.
The characters range from demons, to animals, royalty and Gods. The Bali masks are made from wood, and lovingly carved in great detail. They are sanded until they are very smooth, and painted using oil paints. The bright colors are preserved under a final coating of varnish. This keeps the colors strong, as well as providing a slight shine that glows under the stage lights.

Materials used for a Bali carving
There are many different materials used in Balinese carving, but the most common are wood and stone. There are several different types of wood used, such as ebony, mahogany, teak as well as fragrant sandalwood. This beautifully scented wood is used in mask making and has a lovely pale color.
The price of a carving will vary depending on the wood used. Harder woods are more difficult to carve. As the tropical forests are slowly disappearing, people are becoming more aware, and choosing teak over other woods. Teak trees are grown in managed plantations, which are being constantly replanted, and so not harming the environment.
For stone carving, cement, stone and lava are used, as these are readily available on this volcanic island. These materials are carved in to statues of anything ranging from deities to animals.
