Beads are widely used all over the world in jewelry making, sewing and other types of crafting. Sterling silver beads are defined by their decorative functionality and the way they can be strung together. There are so many different materials used for making beads, from glass, to resin to wood, as well as metals such as brass, bronze and sterling silver.
In Bali, the highly skilled silver smiths create very intricate sterling silver beads. The Balinese style beads are well known all over the world, and can be recognized by the distinct granulation and wire-work designs. These beads can be strung on a charm bracelet, or combined with beads made from other materials in necklaces, or earrings. No matter how the beads are worn, they will always look very distinctive.

how sterling silver beads are made
Genuine Bali silver is made entirely by hand, starting with the weighing, melting and mixing of the silver with the alloy to create 925 sterling silver. The small nuggets of silver are heated in a ceramic pot, using a simple torch fire, powered by gas. This melted silver is then put through a rolling machine to create thin sheets of metal. These thin sheets of silver are then cut in to the size required for the beads.
These sterling silver beads sized pieces are then hammered into semi circular indentations using a brass block and hammering tool. The excess silver is sanded away, and the two halves of the bead are soldered together. The granulation and wire-work is then created and soldered around the bead. This is very intricate and time consuming work. Some beads are now made using a casting process, which speeds things up, when there are orders for thousands at a time.
shapes of silver beads
Sterling silver beads come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. The shape can impact the look and feel of the jewelry. As silver is so pliable, it can be crafted in to a wide variety of shapes from simple geometric forms, to more intricate three dimensional objects. Round beads are the most common shape found, and they are a classic form. However, this is by no means the limit to the shapes that can be created
A saucer bead is a round bead that has been squashed, with very narrow edges, until it looks like a disc. These can be used in between other beads as spacers, to create a pattern. Heart shaped beads are very popular for using on necklaces and earrings, particularly for young girls. Square beads can be either flat or three dimensional, and they feature four straight sides and right angles. A flattened cube can be made to look like a diamond.

bali beads
Sterling silver beads from Bali have a very distinct look. They have very intricate designs, which are made by etching a pattern in to the silver. This pattern is then highlighted with oxidization, which creates a contrast with the bright silver, and gives a bold look. The Bali beads come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common sizes are four to eight millimeters in diameter.
The sterling silver bead can be given a texture to make it have a more interesting look. This texture can be achieved with ridges, or indentations for added depth. The silver can be polished to a high shine, or given a matte finish, or even an antique look. These beads can be worn as a necklace or bracelet, and can be combined with other beads to create a unique piece of jewelry.
