Sarongs have been the traditional clothes for the Balinese for centuries. This piece of cloth was used as every day wear, for both men and women, as they worked in the rice fields, or in the house. It was used to cover their bodies as they walked to the rivers to bathe. It was then used as a towel to dry them off after bathing. Sarongs were even used as thin blankets to cover them when they slept.

As it was, and still is to this day, such an important piece of clothing, many designs have been created to decorate this fabric. Traditional batik, tie dye and now machine printed designs have been used for this versatile piece of clothing.

what is tie dye?

The word tie dye refers to any dye process in which a pattern is produced by folding, twisting or tying the material. Originally, Indonesia adopted the Japanese form of tie dye, called Shibori, and created their own version, called pelangi or tritik. These early versions used natural dyes, and therefore only consisted of a few basic colors. The main colors used in tie dye sarongs were blues, whites and browns

Much later, in the 1960’s, the modern tie dye process was developed in America, and was introduced to Bali by the first travelers. These modern patterns use much brighter colors and many more color combinations. These bright colored tie dye patterns were particularly popular with the hippy community in California. These people traveled, and brought their fashions with them.

how are tie dye sarongs made?

Tie dye sarongs are made by taking a plain piece of fabric. This fabric is washed in very hot water, to get rid of any oil or dirt. It is then folded, twisted or crumpled in to a design of the artist’s choice. This process is such an art, that rarely will you be able to recreate the exact same result each time. Each piece will be unique.

Once twisted in to a design, the fabric is dipped, or sprayed with the different colors. Usually starting from the lightest colors and moving in to the darker ones. The fabric is then left to dry over night, before being washed and hung out to dry.

colors and patterns

Tie dye sarongs can come in any number of colors and patterns. The traditional patterns are spirals, peace signs and diamonds. The marble effect is also a popular look. However, this is by no means all that tie dye can be. The Balinese are such artists, they like to experiment, and new tie dye sarong designs are always appearing in the stores.

The most popular colors for these tie dye sarongs for men, tend to be the rasta colors, red, yellow, green and black, and this is a common look on the men hanging out at the beach. Tie dye for women can come in many colors, but pinks and blues are particular favorites.

Looking for a Batik Sarong? Look no further! Find out why we are the No.1 Online Shopping Store for Sarongs worldwide. Great products at great prices. Wholesale & retail. Global shipping. Shop & Save!

The most comfortable and versatile item you can have in your wardrobe is a batik sarong. This traditional clothing item which originates from many of the southern and eastern areas of Asia is loose and flowing while also flattering to wear.

Batik Sarong
Depending on the manufacturer or individual artisan the sarong may be made from various different fabrics. Common choices include 100% cotton or a cotton blend. Silk is another popular fabric selection. In addition some sarongs may also be made of synthetic fabrics such as rayon. All are designed to be wash and wear.

Sarongs can be made and found in a variety of different lengths and styles. The tube shape is traditional but wraparound sarongs are more popular for beachwear and for casual wear. The wraparound option is typically reserved for women, at least in Indonesia, while the tube style is worn by both men and women.

Sarongs with beautiful batik designs are now a hot item. Traditionally men only wore plaid or checked batik patterns and women wore more traditional batik colors with only a panel of pattern on the back side of the garment. Today many batik colors and patterns make sarongs made from batik a hit locally as well as internationally.

what is batik?

Batik is from Java, not traditionally from Bali. However, just like Balinese silversmiths have incorporated ideas from Java, so have the fabric designers. Batik is a repetitive pattern or design that is dyed into fabric. Historically this fabric has been 100% natural cotton, but now it includes other fabric choices as well.

In Bali, the patterns used in a sarong made from batik include geometric shapes, images from nature and abstract patterns. However, some of the new styles favor painting a single image on the fabric. This creates a masterpiece on the sarong that is a wearable work of art.

You can check out all of the different types of Sarongs we sell – Dress, Beach, Mens, Tie Dye, Batik etc. by clicking on our Sarongs Catalog link.

how is batik made?

Batik design uses the technique of waxing areas of the fabric. Where wax is present the dye will not take to the fabric. This means that many layers of dye are needed to create a multicolored sarong.

The artist will decide the pattern he or she will use and the colors. Starting with the lightest color first the fabric is dyed with this color. Hot, liquid wax is then used to create a pattern on the background. Then, once the wax has fully cooled, the entire fabric is dyed the next color. In a two-color sarong this will be the final dye process.

After leaving the fabric in the dye for the desired time it is removed and boiled. This will remove the wax, revealing the first color and creating the pattern. Multiple colors will only be exposed once the final boiling of the cloth is completed.

Shopping for a Sarong Buckle? Look no further! Find out why we are the No.1 Online Shopping Store worldwide for every type of Sarong Accessory you could want. Great products at great prices. Wholesale & retail. Global shipping. Shop & save!

Sarongs are a very versatile piece of clothing. They can be used as a skirt, dress, or a shawl. They can also be a great accessory for a relaxing day at the beach. Tying a sarong has traditionally been done with a simple knot. This works just fine, however, the fabric can get bulky and the knots can become tangled. To avoid this situation there are sarong buckles available to make tying the sarong much easier and neater.

These buckles come in a variety of materials, and are a stylish way to accessorize your sarong. They can turn a simple look in to a more sophisticated one, allowing you to go from the beach to an evening out in a restaurant.

You can check out all of the different types of Sarongs we sell – Dress, Beach, Mens, Tie Dye, Batik etc. and our collection of sarong buckles by clicking on our Sarongs Catalog link.

what are sarong buckles made of?

Bali is a tropical island with an abundance of natural resources. The coconut trees provide a beautifully rich coffee-colored wood. Other trees on the island also provide a range of different wood textures and colors. The oceans are full of a wide variety of mother of pearl and abalone shells. The Balinese people have amazing artisan talents. Put these qualities together, and you get a wide range of materials and styles of buckles.

Coconut wood is the most common material used for a sarong buckle. It polishes up beautifully to create a very stylish accessory. Mother of pearl shells of all colors, as well as abalone are either used as one piece, or inlaid in resin, creating a very appealing look. Resin comes in a range of colors, and makes a great background for pieces of shell to be placed in to, and arranged in a pattern.

shapes and sizes

The sarong buckle essentially needs to have 2 holes to allow the fabric to pass through and be tied. Other than this, the shape and size really depends on the artist creating it. There are simple square shaped ones, round, and oval. But there are also more creative shapes, such as flowers, butterflies and hearts.

The sizes vary from modestly small, to statement pieces that are much larger. Which one you choose depends on the look you are trying to create. You can purchase a whole range of shapes and sizes to mix and match with your sarong wardrobe.

You can check out all of the different types of Buckles we sell – by clicking on our Sarongs Catalog link.

how to create a skirt

In order to wear a sarong as a skirt, using the buckle, wrap the fabric around your waist, positioning the two ends the way you like. Put the ends on either your right or left hip. Insert the two ends of the sarong through the holes of the buckle. The buckle has two holes, one for each end of the sarong. Pull the fabric until the buckle sits against your hip. Pull the 2 ends and create a knot.

Once in position, experiment with the knot to create the look that you desire. Using this method not only creates a more finished look, but also helps to tie the skirt tight. This tightness reduces the chance of the skirt coming undone.

how to create a dress

There are several dress styles that can be created using the sarong buckle. To make the strapless look, wrap the sarong around your back, and bring the ends together in front. Take the two ends, making sure they are even, and thread them through the holes. Pull the buckle towards your chest, and make a knot with the fabric.

To make a halter neck, bring the two ends of the fabric behind your neck, and attach the sarong buckle in the same way. To make the off the shoulder Roman look, take the two ends over one shoulder, thread through the buckle and tie a knot.

Bali Sarong
Bali Sarong

Most people think of sarongs as being typically used by women. In Bali this is not true. Sarongs are used by both men and women. The style of the sarong men differs slightly to the women’s version, but is still just as popular.

Where in the western culture a sarong may look like a skirt, and therefore appear too feminine, in Bali men have a very different view. The sarong men has been part of traditional clothing for centuries. It is used as a comfortable way of relaxing around the house, as well as an integral part of the Hindu Temple dress code.

styles of sarong men

The most common style of sarong men in Indonesia is the sheath. This is a tube of fabric that is very simple to wear. It requires simply stepping in, and rolling the fabric down until it sits securely on the hips. This style is most common in Java. In Bali the men tend to still use the flat sarong.

Men use sarongs to lounge around the house, to go the beach and also to the temple. When going to the temple, the men wear two sarongs. One regular sarong on the inside, and a shorter one, called “saput” on the outside. This double layer looks very smart, when paired with the white or cream colored temple jacket that men traditionally wear.

bali beltspatterns and colors

As in women’s sarongs, there are many different patterns and colors available for sarongs for men. The patterns tend to be more geometric than floral, to give a more masculine look. The colors are also different. Sarongs for men tend to use more sedate, earth toned colors, rather than the bright tones.

In general, the batik designs are used for the temple sarongs, and are mostly brown in color. More ornate and colorful ikat sarongs are used for important religious ceremonies like weddings, and tooth filing. These are usually very regal, with gold threads running through them. Other styles of cotton sarong are used for relaxing at home or on the beach. The tie-dye style of sarong men, using rasta colors are particularly popular with the young men on the beach

how to wear sarong men

The Balinese have a particular way of wearing their sarongs, that look particularly interesting with folds of fabric hanging at the front. To achieve this look, start by holding the sarong horizontally behind your body. Make sure there is more length on the right side than the left. Fold the left side over to the center of your stomach. Bring the right end round to meet the left in the center, and hold with your right hand. Fold the excess fabric back over your hand to form a pleat. Secure by rolling the waistband over about 3 times, or until it feels tight enough to not fall down.

For a narrower wrap, and a fuller pleat, fold over the hand more, before rolling down. The finished look will have a fold of fabric at the front. This is a suave look, as well as allowing plenty of room for movement. With this extra fabric at the front, walking is easy, as well as sitting down, so there is no need for tiny steps like the women.

When you walk the streets of Bali, or go to the beach, you cannot help but notice the amount of shops selling cotton sarongs. This piece of cloth is the most useful thing to own while you are in Bali. It can be worn to the beach, used as a towel, and even dressed up to wear out in the evening.

The reason for the abundance of sarongs in Bali is due to its long history in the region. This simple garment used to be the only clothing the Balinese people wore. If you venture out in to the villages, you will still see many people wearing them to this day. The older Balinese women still use the old style of wearing a sarong on the bottom half of their bodies, while leaving their chests bare.

advantages of cotton sarongs

Sarongs come in a variety of fabrics, from 100% cotton, cotton blend, and rayon. The most popular fabric though is cotton, being a natural fiber, it is hypoallergenic. This means that it is suitable for people with allergies, asthma, and sensitive skin. The fabric feels soft against the skin, and keeps you feeling cool. You are less likely to perspire when wearing cotton.

This wonderful fabric is durable, withstanding many washes. It also absorbs moisture, so is perfect to take to the beach, in place of a bulky towel. The methods for creating these patterns also vary. There are ones that are mass produced using machines, but there are also ones that are created by hand using time honored ancient techniques. These are made using natural dyes, and are very time consuming to create. These beautiful works of art, can be styled in to a stunning evening dress. Or some people use them as wall hangings, to decorate and bring color to any room.

traditional sarong motifs

Traditionally, the Balinese used to wear batik cotton sarongs. The process of making these patterns involved drawing the pattern using wax, and then dying the fabric. The dyes used were natural dyes, and only 3 colors were used. Brown, indigo and white. These three colors represented the three main Hindu Gods and so had great religious significance. The patterns consisted of repeated lines or shapes.

The simple batik sarongs are usually worn around the house. The more ornate batik styles are used to wear to the temple or for special ceremonies. These can be in all sorts of colors, and tend to be the more regal colors such as purple, yellow, and red. Women wear these with lacy kebaya tops and accessorize with gold jewelry.

modern sarong motifs

The modern motifs used to decorate cotton sarongs are mostly based around the theme of nature. Animals, sea-life and flowers are all common designs that are used. The most popular animal design is the gecko. This is a small lizard that can be found everywhere in Bali. They mostly can be seen on the wall, ready to protect us from mosquitoes.

As well as geckos, you can also find sarongs printed with butterflies, birds, fish and frogs. The colors used for the modern style of cotton sarongs are much more vibrant. Just about any color and color combination is available.

The sarong is a traditional form of clothing for many different cultures around the world. It is a simple piece of flat cloth that is wrapped around the body. In Bali the traditional form is worn to the temples, and there are many beautiful batik versions available. These traditional sarongs are worn with lacy kabayas for the women, or white shirt jackets for the men. The colorful cotton style is used mostly by visitors to the island, but the Balinese can also be found wearing this around the house when they are relaxing.

This style of clothing is particularly appropriate for hot climates, as the thin fabric keeps the body cool. The wrap around style comes in a variety of colors and fabrics, from cotton, to silks. Being such versatile pieces of clothing these are great to use while you are in Bali. With its beach culture, it is the perfect item to have with you. It can be used as a shawl, a skirt or a dress.

sarong dress styles

Sarongs can be used to create several styles of dress, from the classic tie behind the neck, to the more sophisticated strapless, and the classy over the shoulder look. All styles are very simple to create and a perfect way to cover your body while walking to and from the beach.

The style you choose will depend on the look that you are trying to create, and how comfortable you feel. You can even experiment with your own individual style. The possibilities are limitless. Here are a few that we suggest.

the classic dress

The classic sarong dress is created very easily. Wrap the fabric around your body. Take both ends in front of your chest. Twist the ends, and bring them behind your head. Finally, tie in a knot behind your head. The knot can be left as a simple knot, or dressed up with one of the many sarong buckles available.

This little girl look is the easiest and fastest way to tie your sarong dress. It allows for easy movement, as there is no way it will fall off, provided you tie a secure knot. By tying around your neck, there is extra fabric at the front, so the dress hangs nicely, and also gives plenty of room for moving around.

the strapless dress

To create this sophisticated look with a sarong dress, wrap the fabric around your body and tie the ends. The ends can be tied behind your back if the fabric is long enough, or in front if too short. This leaves your chest bare, so a pretty beaded necklace can be worn together with this outfit, to brighten up your bare skin.

This is the perfect dress to wear when going to or from the beach, or when you want to have a casual look. The strapless dress works best on women with larger chests, which helps to keep the fabric up. This style also allows for easy movement, but be sure you tie tight, to avoid any slipping.

over the shoulder dress

This classy look is a little harder to create, but still fairly simple. Hold one end of your sarong dress over the left shoulder, pull the other end around the back of your body, and tie to the end on the left shoulder. Again, you can make a simple knot, or this look works great when tied with a sarong buckle.

This is the classic roman look, and topped with a great hat, is an elegant and stylish way to dine or relax in Bali. This is also very easy to walk in, and will not slip about. The silk fabrics look particularly good when worn this way.

Earrings are the most important piece of womens jewelry. The most classic form of earring is the simple stud. This is usually a small stone, encased in silver, and attached to a post to fit through the ear. This style of earring comes in all sorts of colors and stones. A pair of stud earrings can be used as a backdrop for everything else you are wearing. It is not over powering, but looks very beautiful on the ear.

The stud is also a great style of earring for children to wear. It will not get caught on clothing, so is safer than wearing longer styles. Other earring styles for women are the longer hoop earrings. These are more of a statement than a stud, and can be used for casual or evening outfits.
