Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, mostly copper. The minimum standard mix of silver worldwide for silver sterling jewelry is 92.5%. The reason for the mix is because pure silver is generally too soft for producing sturdy objects. Copper provides and adds strength to the silver mix. Other metals can be used in replace of copper with the intention of reducing tarnishing.

Sterling silver has been used to make cutlery, tea sets, trays, and even musical instruments. In Bali, silver is most commonly used to make jewelry. There is a wide choice of silver sterling jewelry for women, men and children.

silver sterling jewelry in bali

There is a long tradition of working in metals in Bali. For hundreds of years, the highly skilled Balinese artisans created exquisite ornaments for the aristocracy. These ornaments would be mostly made of gold. To this day there is still a strong tradition of gold work. However, with the influence of the west, silver has also become a popular metal to work with. There are many factories creating beautiful silver jewelry.

The Balinese silver smiths are well known for their intricate designs, and granulation work. Men and women sit in workshops and patiently apply tiny granulation and fine wires to the designs, all by hand. In recent years there has been a significant influx of silver smiths from the neighboring island of Java. These smiths bring with them other silver skills. They specialize in the filigree work and ‘plin’ style of shiny flat surfaces.

Most of the silver sterling jewelry found in Bali these days uses a combination of the Balinese and Javanese styles, making for very unique looking pieces.

how is silver jewelry created?

Sterling silver jewelry in Bali is mostly created by hand. The process begins by weighing and mixing the 92.5% silver with the 7.5% copper or other alloys. This is fascinating to see, as the tiny beads of silver and copper are heated with a simple torch, using gas and a foot pump. The molten silver is poured in to wooden molds. When the metal has cooled down, it is put through a rolling mill to create a flat, thin piece of silver.

The smiths take the thin sheet of silver and cut it to create bezels for gem stones. The sheets can also be shaped in to beads, or whatever shapes they wish to create. The fine wire that is used so much is made by pulling the silver through smaller and smaller holes in a hand pulled machine. The granulations are created by cutting the wire, and firing it to create a tiny ball.

Every part of the silver sterling jewelry making process requires patience and skill. One tiny wrong move can ruin hours of hard work. Some factories are starting to use casting machines to speed up the process for larger production. By casting, they can guarantee each piece looks the same. However, the finishing process is still very much hand made, so the final product is still far from the machine made jewelry from other parts of Asia.

how to care for silver jewelry

Silver sterling jewelry is a wonderful product that can last a lifetime with proper care. There are just a few things that you need to do to make sure your jewelry stays looking good. Firstly, and most importantly, you need to use it frequently. Enjoy your jewelry, show it off! Silver tarnishes over time, but not wearing it, and not storing it properly speeds up the tarnishing process.

Secondly, make sure you apply perfumes, lotions or other chemical products before putting on your jewelry. Direct contact with chemicals can damage silver sterling jewelry. Do not wear in a swimming pool for the same reason, as chlorine is a harsh chemical.
