Antique furniture is a term used to refer to pieces that are old – at least one hundred years old. This type of furniture is considered a collectible item, and by using a few strategically placed pieces, can bring a beautiful aesthetic value to a room.

Indonesian antique furniture has influences from the palaces of the Majapahit kingdom, as well as the more recent colonial times.   This style of furniture tends to be made of solid wood, and consists of very sturdy, durable pieces. They come in a variety of shapes, styles and patterns, but in general they are fairly ornate.

Pieces of antique furniture are timeless and look great in any setting. However, it is important to consider the other pieces of furniture in the room before adding an antique, as they can look out of place in a contemporary setting.

There are a great many choices of Indonesian antique furniture, that can be used in any room in your house. From colonial times, there are some beautiful writing tables, chests of drawers and arm chairs to be found. These are finished with a high shine, and give a very elegant appearance. The smooth lines and stylized legs of the furniture of this time period is still very popular to this day.

The older antique furniture dates back to the times of the kingdoms, and are characterized by ornate carvings and gold leaf accents which make wonderful statement pieces in your home. You can find big chests that can be used for storage as well as ornamental purposes. There are also large day beds, four poster beds as well as regal throne shaped chairs.

These antiques are made of solid teak wood, which because it is made from one of the hardest and most durable woods in the world, has lasted for years. Any color decorations may have faded but this adds to the appeal.

Indonesian antique furniture reproduction

There are many genuine antiques in Indonesia, but there are also plenty of places offering “antiques made to order”. This often makes visitors smile, as an antique, by definition, cannot be ordered. However, these reproductions often look just as good as the genuine antiques, at a much lower cost.

Antiques can be created out of recycled wood that has been taken from old buildings or furniture that has fallen apart. The Indonesian craftsmen then recreate beautiful pieces, using the old wood. The faded colors and age of the wood make these pieces of furniture look like  genuine antiques.

Various other techniques are used to make these antique reproductions, and there are some truly stunning pieces available that will enhance your living space, and bring a touch of antique Indonesian style to your home.

Looking after Indonesian antique furniture

Indonesia has a very humid climate, and Indonesian antique furniture contains a high percentage of water within the wood. When moved to a drier climate, the moisture in the furniture will evaporate and cause shrinking and splitting along the grain of the wood.

To avoid this, it is worth using a humidifier in the rooms where you are placing your antique furniture. This will help maintain a constant level of humidity in the air. Alternatively you could keep a container of water nearby.

Try to keep your Indonesian antique furniture away from heat sources such as radiators and heaters, as well as away from direct sunlight. Dust frequently with a soft cloth, and apply a good bees wax about twice a year. Do not use spray polish as it contains silicon, which builds up and creates a sticky surface.

With some care and attention, you will be able to make sure your antique Indonesian furniture will last for many years to come.
