Making bamboo wind chimes
Traditional chimes from Bali are made of bamboo. As a fast growing and environmentally friendly wood, bamboo is considered a good sustainable product. Bamboo of different diameters is cut to set lengths. Then, one side of the bamboo is removed to create differences in the sounds.
Each bamboo wind chime is tuned by hand to just the right pitch. Unlike a metal chime that almost rings, bamboo wind chimes have a denser, more musical sound. Different chimes set next to each other in a pattern create multiple resonant tones.
The tops of the chimes may be a horizontal piece of bamboo or half bamboo. In this style, the chime is a rectangular shape. Round shaped chimes often use a half or a full coconut as the focal point on top.
Weather resistant bamboo
Bamboo is a durable natural wood and is very lightweight. This is perfect for easily mounting the chime in any location or in any climate. However, to ensure the chimes last for years, each piece of bamboo needs to be treated. A bamboo chime should be treated with a varnish to resist both insects as well as moisture.
This varnish may be applied after the bamboo is decorated with a stain. Some chime woodworkers may leave the bamboo a natural color with a clear varnish. Slight blemishes or color variations in the wood just add to the uniqueness of each wind chime.

Unique chimes
Some artisans in Bali also produce metal styles of chimes. They are based on traditional patterns but instead of bamboo chimes they use aluminum or other lightweight metals. Wood is still used as the head of the chimes and is often teak.
This style of wind chime is perfect for a larger garden or area. They are highly resistant to any damage even in the harshest outdoor climates.
