Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and was first developed in India. In those times, yoga would be performed on a bare floor, or with a basic mat made out of animal skin. Over the years, the material used to make the yoga mat has evolved and there are now various choices on the market.

The materials used vary from PVC to cotton, and have differing positive and negative aspects. There are several factors to consider when choosing your yoga mat, some are practical, and others more aesthetic.

PVC is the most commonly used material, as it is great at sticking to the floor, and providing a non slip surface to exercise on. However, this material is not environmentally friendly, and so some yoga fanatics will avoid it.

Rubber is another common material used, and this provides a flexible surface for doing the yoga moves. However, some people may be allergic to the content, and it is not absorbent, which can be uncomfortable.

Cotton is a great natural fabric, which is both absorbent and environmentally friendly so is often the material of choice. However, it lacks the flexible and sticky qualities of the other choices.

There are several different styles of yoga, and the type of mat you choose will depend on the style of yoga you will be performing. If you like hot, or Bikram yoga, this makes you sweat a lot, so it is advisable to find a mat that will be able to absorb your body moisture. Cotton would be the best choice in this situation.

The standard mat for yoga has a texture on one side, and is slightly sticky on the other. This sticky side goes next to the floor, and provides a stable base. The textured side is soft to the touch and provides cushioning under the feet. All yoga mats are easy to roll and store in the corner of the room when not in use.
