There are so many different types of shell under the sea. The most commonly used to make jewelry are Paua, and Mother of Pearl. Mother of pearl is scientifically known as MOP, and it is available in white and black. This is the most common type of shell used to create flat pieces, to be set in jewelry, such as pendants and charms. This shell can be cut in to any shape, and looks great with a simple sterling silver or brass bezel around.
Paua is renowned for its deep scintillating blue green and turquoise colors. It is often referred to as the opal of the sea due to the depth of the color. This shell makes stunning jewelry and looks particularly beautiful when set in sterling silver, as the bright silver brings out the bright hues of the shell.

Sea shell is an extremely versatile material to work with. If you work with the natural contours of the shell it makes for very interesting and unique pieces of jewelry. Flat pieces of shell can be found, but are not as interesting to the eye. To make them more appealing, the Balinese artisans like to engrave designs in to the shell. All sorts of intricate designs can be engraved, and when this is then set in metal, creates a beautiful piece.
Pendants can be created out of these engraved pieces of shell, or larger shells such as the conch. Conch shells go through many lengthy procedures to give them an antique finish before making them in to wearable seashell jewelry. These shells are highly polished with sand paper, then heat treated to bring out the veins. They can then be inlaid with stones to fill the natural holes, and given sterling silver highlights to really make the piece pop. These pendants make fantastic statement pieces.
