History of pottery Bali

There is a small village located between Denpasar and Tabanan, in Southern Bali, called Pejaten village that is world famous for its excellent pottery Bali products. Every home in this village has a small scale pottery production, which sustains the family unit. Balinese families work together using age old pottery methods such as slow hand wheels and rice straw fires.

Traditionally, the Balinese people used large terracotta pots to store water, but over the years, other options have become available, and less households use these traditional styles. When the demand for ceramic household products declined in the 1970’s, this village turned their skills to producing ceramic roof tiles.

With the influx of tourism into Bali, there was an increased demand for roof tiles, and this village has been able to supply this demand with great quality terracotta tiles. A visit to this village is a fascinating experience, to see firsthand how the pottery Bali is made.

How to care for your pottery Bali

The pottery from Bali is created on a low fire, with a maximum temperature of 650 degrees Celsius. This means that the pottery is very porous and fragile. However, with careful handling these beautiful pieces will last for years.

Terracotta pots from Bali that are being used for decorative purposes need to be kept in dry conditions. Too much exposure to dampness can lead to cracking as well as fading of the colors and patterns. There are moisture sealants available which help protect the surface.

Pottery should be cleaned with washing detergent and left to dry thoroughly before being stored. Dusting with a feather duster will keep the pieces clean and looking their best.

All glazes used in making Balinese pottery is lead free so you do not need to worry about any harmful chemicals. These glazes seal in the color and help keep the pottery pieces looking good for years to come.
