One of the most popular products produced in Bali is the wooden statue. The talented Balinese wood carvers make a wide range of products from small figurines to large imposing statues.

The themes for the statues range from Balinese dancers, to mythical creatures and animals. They are finished in natural wood tones or hand painted in a wide range of colors.

Carving wood requires a great deal of patience and precision. The carvers start with a block of wood, which they cut down to the size required. They then use very simple tools to carve in to the wood to create the desired image.

Workshops can be found in almost every village, where the carvers are sitting on the floor, surrounded by wood shavings. Whole families work side by side to create these wooden masterpieces.

Types of wood used in Bali carvings

There are many different types of wood available in Bali, and each has its own unique look. Coconut wood has a beautiful grain running through it, which brings a special quality to any Bali wooden statue. Dark ebony wood brings a wonderful beauty to the piece, and teak and jack fruit are also very popular fine grained woods to use.

Wood carvers work with the natural grain of the wood, to bring dimension to the Bali wooden statue. The wood is sanded over and over until it is very smooth, and a shine is created by rubbing with a piece of bamboo.

These smooth and shiny pieces are absolutely exquisite to the eye and make beautiful decorations. Such care is taken in every detail of a Bali wooden statue, and the fact that each piece is carved by hand means that you really are buying a unique piece.

Bali wooden statue dancers

Bali Wooden Statue Dancer

The Balinese dancers are so beautiful and graceful, it is no wonder that artists have been intrigued with them for years. Many works of art have been devoted to this elegant image. A Balinese dancer depicted in mid dance flow is one of the most popular types of Bali wooden statue to be found.

A statue of a dancer, in a classically angular pose, holding a fan, and wearing an ornate headdress is a great souvenir to remember Bali by. So much care goes in to each tiny detail of the face, and costume, one statue can take days to make. These dancer statues come in a variety of sizes, and are carved out of several different types of wood.

A statue left in the natural wood color makes an elegant decoration, or, if you prefer some color, a hand painted one can recreate the colors of the dancers costumes and bring it to life.

Contemporary Bali wooden statue

Over the years, with the influx of tourism and wholesale handicraft businesses for export, the style of Balinese wooden statues has evolved to suit the market.

Brightly colored statues of cats can be seen everywhere, and these are very popular with cat lovers the world over. These cat statues are available in a variety of sizes and styles, from simple black and white to multicolored versions.

Other contemporary styles depict human forms, such as a Balinese man, holding his fighting cockerel. Two people holding each other in an embrace is another popular form and makes a great present for a young couple.

These contemporary Bali wooden statues are made with less detail than the more traditional style, focusing more on creating smooth, sleek lines and abstract figures.

Stylized human and animal statues make great art displays in your home, placed on a shelf or table, and lit with some carefully placed lighting.

These are carved in the forms of Gods and demons, as well as mythical creatures. Some have gilded accents to give an impression of wealth and power.

These traditional Balinese carvings can still be seen to this day, on the temples and houses of the local residents. More contemporary styles have developed with the influx of foreign visitors, and there are various styles of handicrafts and furniture on offer for visitors to buy.

These doors and room dividers make great decorative items for any setting, and they can be found in various sizes, There is also the possibility of ordering them custom made, to fit your specific needs.

Another popular traditional style of Balinese carvings are the famous masks that are made here. These hold a deep spiritual meaning for the Balinese people, and are held in high regard. Masks are used to cover the faces of the dancers performing traditional Balinese dances, and when not in use, they are stored in a safe place in the temple.

Masks take many different forms, and are carved out of wood, that is sanded to a smooth finish, and coated with several layers of paint to achieve a glossy look. These masks make great wall decorations in your home.

Exterior Balinese doors and gates

Balinese Door

Every Balinese house is surrounded by high walls, and has only a single small entrance. This entrance opens to the street, and these styles of Balinese doors consist of two panels that open inwards. Each panel is fairly small, as the Balinese are extremely superstitious and they do not want to provide too much space that spirits could enter.

These two panels are secured by a wooden bar that sits in two grooves. When this bar is in place, the door cannot be pushed open. The decoration on these panels is based on floral designs, which are often highlighted in color.

These exterior Balinese doors could be used as an alternative to a front door, or as a gateway in your garden. Traditionally these exterior gates were made of wood, and this is still the preferred look. However there are also iron versions available that are being used more and more in the cities, where security needs to be tighter.

Interior Balinese doors

The Balinese style doors that are used inside the house are not quite as elaborate as the ones used for show on the outside but there are still some beautiful versions available. Interior doors do not include gold highlights, but are mostly left in their natural wood state, with designs created in a cut out style.

These interior Balinese doors can be hung in any room in the house, and can also be used to decorate wardrobes or closets. A TV cabinet can be spruced up with a panel from a carved Balinese door and when the TV is not in use, you have a wonderful ornamental piece of furniture.

Materials used

Balinese doors are typically paneled, and carved from teak, jack fruit wood, or other woods available on the island. The wood can be highlighted with varnish or stained a color to match your decor. There are also versions that are painted or gilded with gold leaf.

Many manufacturers are using recycled teak wood, taken from old buildings and fishing boats, to make some very interesting Balinese doors. The original paint work has been weathered and faded and the result is very unique. All of these look great in any setting, and bring an exotic style to your decor, both inside and outside your house.

You can also find some beautiful iron gates that run on runners, and have various designs incorporated that give an elegant impression. These can be locked and provide full security to your home.

Many craftspeople, including those selling their Bali wood carvings, have learned the skills from other members in their family. Bali is truly a land of artisans. In fact, in some areas wood carving, jewelry making or furniture construction is actually the local industry.

Bali Wood Carvings

Balinese Mask

Wood carving in Bali comes in all different styles and themes. Very traditional carvings will mirror the elaborate artwork found in the temples located across the island. Another traditional form of wood carving from Bali includes the use of drift wood and roots that allows the artisan to use the natural shape to enhance the end design.

Wood carving takes various forms. There are massive panel designs that are amazingly detailed works of art. Statues and figurines, both large and small, can feature humans, religious figures and animals.

Other types of Balinese wood carvings include masks. Many of these masks are used in the various ceremonies that are a major source of entertainment and culture in the area. These masks each tell a story and are very elaborate and often very large and ornate. Many are painted with acrylic or oil based paint and then lacquered to a brilliant finish.

Traditional versus Modern

Like many aspects of Bali there is a very traditional element of artisans that hold true to their roots. There are also artisans that are more geared towards creating export art items. However, both take great pride in their finished products.

Traditional artisans and woodworkers tend to add incredible amounts of detail to their carvings. Often these include religious images and themes. These particular carvings may be incredibly large by Western standards.

More modern styles of carving are on the minimalistic side. They feature the grains of the woods in the shape and pattern of the sculptured item. These wood carvings from Bali are popular around the world for their clean lines and balance.

You can find out more information about the process of carving in Bali by checking out our Bali Carving and Balinese Carvings pages.

Depending on the woodworker and his or her style, the designs may be highly imaginative or very realistic. All are handmade so they are each just a bit different from the next. Realistic wood carvings may include a range of different animals. Elephants, snakes, horses, birds and monkeys are iconic to the island. You may also find these very real shapes in beautifully stylized pieces, a great combination of imagination and reality.
