Influences on Indonesian art
Indonesia is well known for its delicious spices and through trading this commodity, many visitors passed through, and brought elements of their own cultures. The most visible influences are from India, China and Europe. The Hindu culture from India has permeated much of Indonesian culture, bringing the epic stories from ancient times. These have had a very large influence on Indonesian art.
The shadow puppets or Wayang Kulit, are used to entertain the people, and also appear in many paintings. These fascinating characters, illuminated from behind, give a very mythical and spiritual feel.
The geography of Indonesia is very diverse, with forests, lakes and mountains, as well as beaches and rice fields. All these landscapes are captured in the paintings. Mountains are a particularly dominant theme, as this dramatic natural form is considered to be very spiritual.
Indonesian art from Java
Java is a very densely populated island, and is home to the government as well as several very busy cities. Yogyakarta is known as the artistic capital of Java, as the sultan here has been a great supporter of the arts for many years. Indonesian art from Bali
