An Indonesian mask varies from region to region, as well as the purpose it was intended for. There are masks worn for funerals, initiation ceremonies as well as temple celebrations. The masks are beautiful works of art, that are believed to hold both spiritual as well as religious significance.

Indonesian masks are still used to this day, and are fashioned in the same traditional styles, using techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. There are also more modern versions available for sale. These make great wall decorations for your home, villa or hotel.

Indonesian Masks from Bali

Bali is the only Hindu island in Indonesia, and the temple ceremonies and dances incorporate various mask styles. A Balinese mask dancer is held in very high regard in the society, and there are certain rituals that they have to go through before donning the mask.

The Barong is a popular character in Balinese dances, and it has quite a wild looking form. The eyes are large and bulbous, and he has long teeth which curve upwards. His hair is wild and unruly, and protrudes from the edges of the mask. This character appears in several dance performances, and is quite menacing.

Balinese masks are carved out of wood, which is dried thoroughly before applying paints. An undercoat of white  is applied, with colored paints added on top. Various colors are used, and gold accents are applied for extra affect. Horsehair is used to represent hair, mustaches or beards.

Magic and spiritualism play a very important role in Balinese life, and the people are very superstitious. These Barong masks are believed to hold spiritual energy and as such are greatly revered.

Indonesian Masks from Java

An Indonesian mask from Java takes a very different form to the ones found in Bali. They have a much smoother, stylized look, with very sharp features. They are painted with ordinary paint and not lacquered, which means they are not as shiny as the Balinese versions. These masks have a brace in the back, which the performer grips with his teeth, to hold the mask in place.

Five colors are used on this style of Indonesian mask. Red is used to symbolize courage, black for ambition, yellow for wisdom, white for purity and green for peace. There is a colorful carving across the forehead, using all of these colors, and the face is a pale cream or white color, with high cheek bones, and a square chin.

These masks are made for the performers of traditional opera, or “wayang topeng” which is based on the ancient shadow puppet plays from the 18th century. The story is told by a narrator, while the masked performers do not speak.

The most well known style of textile in Bali, is the made using the ikat method. Ikat means “to knot” and this style of weaving is very intricate and time consuming. The cotton threads are bunched together, and tied in knots before being dyed. These threads are then used to create a very unique weave, using a hand loom.

These influences can be seen in the styles of Indonesian furniture that can be found here. There are classic styles, influenced by the palaces of the Majapahit kingdom, as well as colonial styles influenced by the Dutch colonists. There are also more contemporary designs that have been adopted as a result of modernization and western influences.

The furniture here is made from a wide variety of materials and using various techniques and textures. Whatever you are looking for, you will be able to find it in abundance, in Indonesia. The difficulty will be deciding which style you want to choose!

Traditional Indonesian furniture is made using solid wood such as teak or mahogany, and is carved with ornate designs. The most popular pieces include four poster beds and large day beds. These can be used as centerpieces in your bedroom or living room, and give a regal feel to the room. When draped with a mosquito net, a four poster bed provides a wonderful cocoon to retreat to when you are feeling tired.

A day bed has various uses, from a place to sit together with friends, to an extra bed in the evening. This classic piece of furniture is fairly large, and can be brightened up with colorful drapes and pillows.

A wonderfully useful piece of Indonesian furniture is the room partition or Gebyok. This is an intricately hand carved piece of wood that can be used  as a decorative way of breaking up a room.  These are often found in living rooms, to cordon off an area for greeting guests.

Modern Indonesian furniture

Modern Indonesian furniture uses a more minimalist approach, following the latest trends of the world, but putting an Indonesian twist on it. Indonesian furniture vendors use clean lines, and solid colors to create stylish furniture that can be used in any setting.

Synthetic rattan is used in place of natural rattan for a sleeker look, and makes for great looking outdoor furniture. This synthetic fiber can be painted in any color, and provides a vibrant finish that brightens up any garden.

Metal and glass as well as resin and shells are all used to create interesting looking pieces of furniture with a tropical twist. The Indonesian artisans are able to use their ancient techniques of furniture making, and give it a contemporary look that is truly unique.

About teak

Teak is a tropical hardwood that is known for its durability and water resistance. It is grown in plantations on the island of Java, and used to make a wide range of teak Indonesian furniture products. It is yellowish brown in color, and has a good grain and texture. Teak has natural oils that protect it from the weather as well as termites. Over time, with sun exposure, the color of the wood will fade to a silvery color.

Traditional teak Indonesian furniture consists of very large and heavy pieces, such as four poster beds, with beautifully carved legs and posts, day beds, large dining room tables, as well as ornate armoires used for storing plates and cutlery. These tend to be stained with a dark varnish but this can be changed according to your request.

Contemporary teak furniture can also be found, made using simpler designs, without the ornate carving. Beautiful sleek beds, as well as chaise long that have smooth lines are particularly appealing.

Recycled/reclaimed teak Indonesian furniture

For hundreds of years, the Indonesian people have been using teak wood to make furniture and as well as doors, and window shutters for their houses. Many of these old buildings have fallen in to ruin, but the wood is still able to be recycled, and is being used to create very interesting pieces of furniture.

This recycled teak wood has an uneven finish, from years of weathering, which gives it a unique appeal. Furniture made from this material is durable and stylish, as well as having the advantage of being environmentally friendly.

A coffee table or dining room table made from reclaimed teak wood will provide a great centerpiece for your room, that your guests will be sure to admire. It has a vintage feel to it, providing a cozy feeling to the room.

Care and maintenance of teak Indonesian furniture

Teak  furniture requires minimal care, but there are a few things that you can do to maintain the natural beauty of the wood.  It is recommended that you wash your furniture about once a year, using a teak cleaning solution and a soft brush. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off.

To prolong the life of your teak  furniture, and to keep it looking new, it is advisable to rub teak oil on the wood around three to six times a year. Try to avoid using harsh chemicals around your furniture as these may cause damage.

Outdoor Indonesian furniture can be covered during the winter months to keep it protected against harsh weather conditions.

Exterior Balinese doors and gates

Balinese Door

Every Balinese house is surrounded by high walls, and has only a single small entrance. This entrance opens to the street, and these styles of Balinese doors consist of two panels that open inwards. Each panel is fairly small, as the Balinese are extremely superstitious and they do not want to provide too much space that spirits could enter.

These two panels are secured by a wooden bar that sits in two grooves. When this bar is in place, the door cannot be pushed open. The decoration on these panels is based on floral designs, which are often highlighted in color.

These exterior Balinese doors could be used as an alternative to a front door, or as a gateway in your garden. Traditionally these exterior gates were made of wood, and this is still the preferred look. However there are also iron versions available that are being used more and more in the cities, where security needs to be tighter.

Interior Balinese doors

The Balinese style doors that are used inside the house are not quite as elaborate as the ones used for show on the outside but there are still some beautiful versions available. Interior doors do not include gold highlights, but are mostly left in their natural wood state, with designs created in a cut out style.

These interior Balinese doors can be hung in any room in the house, and can also be used to decorate wardrobes or closets. A TV cabinet can be spruced up with a panel from a carved Balinese door and when the TV is not in use, you have a wonderful ornamental piece of furniture.

Materials used

Balinese doors are typically paneled, and carved from teak, jack fruit wood, or other woods available on the island. The wood can be highlighted with varnish or stained a color to match your decor. There are also versions that are painted or gilded with gold leaf.

Many manufacturers are using recycled teak wood, taken from old buildings and fishing boats, to make some very interesting Balinese doors. The original paint work has been weathered and faded and the result is very unique. All of these look great in any setting, and bring an exotic style to your decor, both inside and outside your house.

You can also find some beautiful iron gates that run on runners, and have various designs incorporated that give an elegant impression. These can be locked and provide full security to your home.

Bali is a tropical island with a very ancient culture. This culture permeates every part of life in Bali, from the offerings being placed on the streets to the ceremonies performed in the temples. The Balinese people are still very much holding on to their roots, which they are extremely proud of.

However, Bali has received visitors from all over the world for many years, and many foreigners have settled here and made this their home. These people have brought their western ideas and customs with them, and in this way Bali has been influenced, and has adopted many modern styles.

Modern Balinese decor is the result of all these influences, the unique Balinese style can still be seen, but has been brought up to the twentieth century with a modern day twist. The Balinese craftsmen use the natural resources that can be found on the island, and create some very unusual contemporary pieces that look great in any setting.

For the living room, you can find sleek sofas, created in geometric shapes, and bright colors. Coffee tables made from the roots of teak trees and finished off with a piece of glass are great center pieces, and provide a rustically modern touch.

Smoothly sanded wooden sculptures, placed in the corner of the room provide an art element, as well as a piece of modern art on the wall. Wall hangings made of batik cloth also make a great way to brighten up the wall.

Standing lamps, with shades created out of colorful resin or glass create mood lighting in the evenings as well as interesting decorative items.
