Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, it consists of thousands of islands, each with its own unique culture, language and artistic styles. Indonesia has also been an important trade region since the 7th century, and as such has been influenced by both traders, and colonizers.

These influences can be seen in the styles of Indonesian furniture that can be found here. There are classic styles, influenced by the palaces of the Majapahit kingdom, as well as colonial styles influenced by the Dutch colonists. There are also more contemporary designs that have been adopted as a result of modernization and western influences.

The furniture here is made from a wide variety of materials and using various techniques and textures. Whatever you are looking for, you will be able to find it in abundance, in Indonesia. The difficulty will be deciding which style you want to choose!

Traditional Indonesian furniture

Traditional Indonesian furniture is made using solid wood such as teak or mahogany, and is carved with ornate designs. The most popular pieces include four poster beds and large day beds. These can be used as centerpieces in your bedroom or living room, and give a regal feel to the room. When draped with a mosquito net, a four poster bed provides a wonderful cocoon to retreat to when you are feeling tired.

A day bed has various uses, from a place to sit together with friends, to an extra bed in the evening. This classic piece of furniture is fairly large, and can be brightened up with colorful drapes and pillows.

A wonderfully useful piece of Indonesian furniture is the room partition or Gebyok. This is an intricately hand carved piece of wood that can be used  as a decorative way of breaking up a room.  These are often found in living rooms, to cordon off an area for greeting guests.

Modern Indonesian furniture

Modern Indonesian furniture uses a more minimalist approach, following the latest trends of the world, but putting an Indonesian twist on it. Indonesian furniture vendors use clean lines, and solid colors to create stylish furniture that can be used in any setting.

Synthetic rattan is used in place of natural rattan for a sleeker look, and makes for great looking outdoor furniture. This synthetic fiber can be painted in any color, and provides a vibrant finish that brightens up any garden.

Metal and glass as well as resin and shells are all used to create interesting looking pieces of furniture with a tropical twist. The Indonesian artisans are able to use their ancient techniques of furniture making, and give it a contemporary look that is truly unique.

Types of materials used

Indonesia has an abundance of natural resources, and the artisans are very skilled at taking what is available and creating works of art. Rattan is made from grass that grows in abundance, and is dried and woven into various shapes. It can be used to create chairs and tables, and can be stained various colors to match your decor.

Teak wood is a strong, weather resistant wood that is used to create both indoor and outdoor  furniture. It has a beautiful natural glow, that can be enhanced with varnish.  This is a popular choice for making tables and chairs as well as beds.

Old teak wood from ruined buildings and other structures can also be used to create great looking rustic furniture. The indentations and imperfections add to the appeal, as well as the white wash finish. Similarly, wood taken from discarded fishing boats is being used to make some very interesting modern pieces of furniture with a history to tell.
